We’re soliciting short stories and essays for Fig Tree Lit, our monthly literary newsletter

Posted on February 15, 2021

We started Fig Tree Books LLC in 2013 with the idea to publish only fiction, but expanded the list to include memoirs — Angela Himsel’s A River Could Be A Tree); and Abigail Pogrebin’s My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew—as well as a non-fiction book: Thane Rosenbaum’s Saving Free Speech … from Itself.

At the end of 2019, we brought out the initial issue of Fig Tree Lit, a monthly newsletter that discusses current literary and cultural issues relevant to the American Jewish audience.

Typical issues of Fig Tree Lit can include: Jews of Different Hues, Short Stories, Essays, Questions and Answers, Chapters from My Jewish Year, Audios and Videos of cultural events, Discussion Questions for our books, information on new books we publish, and mini-reviews of books we didn’t publish.

We’ve been particularly pleased with the number and quality of short stories and essays that have been submitted in the last few months. Fig Tree Lit is now reaching a wider audience that includes authors of interesting short pieces … and chapters of books in process.

So now we’re reaching out—actively soliciting writers of short stories and essays for Fig Tree Lit. The submission rules are simple:

1. Short stories, essays, and chapters from unpublished works must deal with the American Jewish experience.

2. They can be fiction, memoirs, or non-fiction (labelled appropriately).

3. The maximum length is 5,000 words.

4. The submission should be accompanied by a very short introduction (1-2 sentences), a brief author bio, and an author photo.

5. Send everything to: info@FigTreeBooks.net.

We’ll get back to you within a relatively short period of time.
